Telecentric lenses for the inspection of microplates
Application case inspection of microplates
Introduction
A microplate, also known as microwell plate, is a flat plate with multiple "wells" used as small test tubes. Microplates have become standard tools in analytical research and clinical diagnostic testing laboratories. Although several configurations are possible, microplates are typically arranged in a 2:3 rectangular matrix with 6, 12, 24, 48, 96, 384 or 1536 sample wells (see Figure 1).
The application
Microplates are characterized by multiple wells arranged in rectangular matrix that can be quite large in many cases. Most plate readers provide a top-down inspection of the samples, thus relatively large fields of view are often required. At the same time, perspective must be considered when choosing the right optics, as common fixed focal length lenses may produce blind spots at bottom of the wells (see Figure 2). For this reason, telecentric lenses are the preferred solution for this type of application.
